1902 Dumont Depot
The 120-year-old Depot, that we are calling the “Dumont Depot”, resided in Dumont, Colorado. It had been used as a storage area for a local rafting company. They wanted to build a new storage unit so wanted the Depot to find a new home.
It made sense for our Moffat Road Railroad Museum to acquire the Depot for several reasons:
- When Colorado & Southern Railroad went into bankruptcy, the bank named David Halliday Moffat as the receiver of the railroad. In owning the railroad, he also owned the Depot.
- Our museum needed a Family Train Ride Ticket Window, more exhibit display space, and a Community Event Center! This event center will serve as an affordable venue to accommodate small weddings, business meetings, birthday parties, etc.
- We would be saving a unique piece of Colorado railroad history.
We successfully moved the Depot on October 17, 2023 from Dumont to Granby. (See videos below on this page and/or read the press release). In order to make that happen, we raised the following: $20,000 for us to build a foundation to set the building on, $50,000 to transport the building to our museum, and $15,000 for crane operation. The roof area was then covered to protect the building from the winter weather.
What came next? The Depot got a new shingled roof!
… thanks to the generosity of several board members, individuals, and one company, The Roofing Company who donated shingles to the matching funds campaign! $15k was raised to match the $10k donated from board member, Don O’Neill, and $5k from a patron donor, Fred Milanovich.
Our director, Dave Naples, got started with the construction plans and was successful in getting our volunteer, Joe Fassel, and contract workers to complete the roof before the snow came late fall 2024!
Next up for project work and funding needs:
- Restore and renovate the Depot’s interior woodwork (funds needed to be raised first) = $15,000
- Run electrical and install all outlets and lights = $21,000
- Install propane heater = $8,000
Once funds are raised, in the Winter 2024/Spring 2025, we hope to start restoration and renovation of the Depot’s interior. Summer 2025 we plan to build an annex to the Depot to have restrooms and a kitchen. We will need to raise approximately $125,000 more for the completion of this Depot project.
